First Results of the IODP Baltic Sea Expedition

Last fall, an international team of researchers launched a drilling expedition to the Baltic Sea collecting 1.623 metres of sediment cores drilled at 8 different sites in water-depths between 23 and 437 metres. The sediment samples are now analyzed at MARUM in Bremen revealing a lot about the climate history of the Baltic Sea. Among others researchers have found an enormous amount of bacteria in the subsurface sediment samples.
