The methane cycle in subseafloor sediments is the main area of Karen Marie Hilligsøe's research. Karen Marie's work at the Center will include regional descriptions of the role of methane in the marine sediments, with emphasis on the biogeochemical processes involved in areas with shallow gas and hot spots of methane flux.

Karen Marie Hilligsøe have previously worked as a post doc. in biological oceanography at Aarhus University and the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources and have participated in several marine expeditions including the entire Galathea 3 expedition. She has obtained a Ph.D. degree in theoretical physics.
