Tim Engelhardt will be working with marine viral ecology. For pelagic environments and surface sediments, viruses are well recognized to be a significant factor that influences microbial evolution, diversity and biogeochemistry. Tim's work will focus on viral communities and phage host interactions in the marine deep biosphere, the unique, energy-limited and slow environment below the surface using a combination of classical methods from microbiology and virology, molecular techniques as well as bioinformatic tools.
